The Model 34 (2017–) is an all-aluminum bass guitar designed with my partners Matthew Hall and Brian Johnson at Obstructures.
Currently I am optimizing the design of the neck in order to maximize stiffness and further minimize weight. This numeric model represents the neck as a stack of hyperelleptical curves whose equations are represented in a parameterized manufacturing model. The code for this work can be seen at github.com/njmattes/model34-maths.
The Model 34 was a gold medal winner at the 2017 International design awards and a gold medal winner at the 2019 European product design awards.
